The longest drive in the Tarentaise

These resorts sit at the top of the valley beyond Bourg-Saint-Maurice, so every transfer here is the full length of the Tarentaise plus a serious climb. From Chambery it is around two hours; from Geneva it is over three. That gap is the largest of any area we serve, and it is the strongest case for checking Chambery, Lyon and Grenoble before booking a Geneva flight out of habit.

The road up is the point

The climb from Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Tignes and Val d’Isere gains around 1,500 metres in a series of hairpins, and it is the section that closes in heavy snow. It is also why these resorts ski when lower ones do not. A driver who works this road through the season reads it; the same road in a hire car, in the dark, after a flight, with a family in the back, is the reason private transfers exist at all.

Tignes is four villages

Tignes is not one place: Le Lac and Val Claret sit up at 2,100 m beside the lake, Le Lavachet between them, and Les Brevieres and Les Boisses lower down the road. They are several minutes apart on a mountain road, so the village name matters on the booking. Val d’Isere is more concentrated, though La Daille at the entrance is a good ten minutes from the far end of the village.

The quieter neighbours

Sainte-Foy sits between Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Tignes and is the area’s open secret – small, wooded, no queues, and a favourite of people who have skied the big two for years. La Rosiere faces south across the valley towards Les Arcs, links over the Italian border to La Thuile, and gets the sun for most of the day. Both are shorter drives than Tignes or Val d’Isere, and both are cheaper.

How long is the transfer to Tignes or Val d’Isere?

Around two hours from Chambery and over three from Geneva. They are the furthest resorts up the Tarentaise, so this is the longest drive of any French area we serve.

Which airport should I use?

Chambery is comfortably the closest, then Grenoble and Lyon, with Geneva furthest. The difference here is larger than anywhere else we drive, so it is worth checking flights into all four.

Which part of Tignes am I staying in?

Worth finding out before you book. Val Claret, Le Lac, Le Lavachet, Les Boisses and Les Brevieres are separate villages on the same mountain road, several minutes apart. Give us the full name and the address.

Is the road ever closed?

Rarely, but it can be held during heavy snowfall or avalanche work. We watch conditions and adjust the pickup rather than setting off into a closure. Build a margin into your departure day.

Are Sainte-Foy and La Rosiere on the same lift pass?

No – they are separate ski areas with their own passes, and their own character. They are closer, quieter and cheaper to reach than Tignes and Val d’Isere.
