The drive to Val d’Isere

The route runs south from Geneva past Annecy and Albertville, up the Tarentaise valley through Moutiers and on to Bourg-Saint-Maurice. From there the road turns up towards Tignes and Val d’Isere, climbing steadily along the Isere gorge for the final stretch.

That last section is narrow in places and genuinely mountainous. It is also the part most affected by weather: in heavy snow the road slows down, and occasionally the authorities hold traffic. A driver who does this route weekly through the season reads those conditions rather than being surprised by them.

Saturdays in the Espace Killy

Saturday is changeover day and the Tarentaise carries traffic for every resort in the valley at once. The section between Albertville and Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the bottleneck. Journeys take significantly longer than a weekday, and the Saturday price reflects the extra hours the vehicle and driver are committed for. On the return leg, leave more margin than you think you need.

Standard or VIP

Standard takes up to eight passengers. VIP takes up to seven in a higher specification vehicle, which on a three-hour-plus journey is a noticeable difference rather than a cosmetic one. Larger groups are priced as the number of vehicles required, travelling together.

Children, skis and luggage

Child seats are free but must be requested at booking, with the ages of the children. Declare ski and snowboard bags at the same time: eight adults with full equipment need a different vehicle from eight adults with cabin bags.

Arriving in Val d’Isere

Val d’Isere runs along the valley floor from La Daille at the entrance, through the main village, out to Le Fornet at the far end. These are several minutes apart and the correct one matters on arrival in the dark with luggage, so give the exact accommodation address rather than the resort name.

Going home

For departures we work back from your flight time and build in the descent, the Saturday traffic and the extra time ski luggage takes at check-in. From Val d’Isere that usually means an earlier start than guests expect; it is the right call.
