Geneva Airport to the French Alps: A Ski Transfer Guide for Winter 2026/27

Most ski holidays in the French Alps begin in the arrivals hall at Geneva. It is the closest big airport to the northern resorts, it has flights from almost every UK airport, and from there the drive to Chamonix takes under an hour and a half. To Tignes it takes over three. This guide covers how long each transfer takes from Geneva, what changes on a Saturday, and how to plan the journey so the first day of your holiday is not spent in a queue.

Why most Alpine ski trips start in Switzerland

Geneva Airport sits right on the French border, so you land in Switzerland and are in France a few minutes later. It handles far more winter flights than Lyon, Chambery or Grenoble, which usually means more choice of times and fares. The trade-off is distance: the resorts of the Tarentaise valley (the Three Valleys, Paradiski, Tignes and Val d’Isere) are a long drive away, and on a busy Saturday that drive gets longer. The closer you are staying to Geneva, the more it is the obvious choice.

Chamonix: the shortest transfer

Chamonix is about 1h25 from Geneva Airport, straight down the motorway and into the valley. Argentiere, further up the same valley, takes around 1h37. Megeve is a similar distance, about 1h22. If you want the shortest transfer from Geneva, these are the resorts to look at, and a late-evening arrival is easy.

Morzine and the Portes du Soleil

The Portes du Soleil is the nearest big ski area to Geneva. Morzine is around 1h29 from the airport, Avoriaz about 1h45 (the last stretch climbs to a car-free resort, so your driver drops you at the resort entrance) and Chatel about 1h43. For families who want a short journey and a large ski area, it is hard to beat.

Getting to Morzine

Morzine is about 1h29 from Geneva Airport, from €200 for the whole vehicle with VAT included.

Courchevel and the Three Valleys

The Three Valleys is the largest linked ski area in the world, and the transfer reflects it. From Geneva, Courchevel is about 2h32, Meribel around 2h25, La Tania 2h25 and Les Menuires 2h34. Val Thorens, at the head of its valley, takes about 2h57. Every one of these routes uses the same valley road up from Moutiers, which is where Saturday traffic builds (more on that below).

Getting to Courchevel

Four airports reach Courchevel. Chambery Airport is the closest, about 1h28 — 1h04 less than from Geneva, and cheaper. Every price is for the whole vehicle, VAT included.

Tignes and Val d’Isere

These are the longest transfers from Geneva: about 3h07 to Tignes and 3h14 to Val d’Isere. If you are flexible about airports, Chambery is about an hour closer: around 2h03 to Tignes and 2h10 to Val d’Isere. If Geneva has the better flight, it is still a comfortable journey in a private vehicle, with a stop on the way if you want one.

Getting to Val d'Isere

Four airports reach Val d'Isere. Chambery Airport is the closest, about 2h10. Every price is for the whole vehicle, VAT included.

La Plagne and Les Arcs

The Paradiski resorts sit between the Three Valleys and Tignes. La Plagne is about 2h40 from Geneva and Les Arcs around 2h47, with Peisey-Vallandry (between the two) at roughly 2h39. Both resorts have several villages at different heights, so give the exact village and accommodation address when you book. Your driver goes to your door, not to a central drop-off.

Getting to La Plagne

Four airports reach La Plagne. Chambery Airport is the closest, about 1h36. Every price is for the whole vehicle, VAT included.

Saturday changeover: plan for traffic

Most chalets and apartments in the Alps change guests on a Saturday, so tens of thousands of skiers travel up and down the same roads on the same day. The times above are for clear roads. On a peak Saturday in February, the valley roads below the big resorts can add a great deal to them, and the afternoon return to Geneva is often busier than the morning.

What helps: an earlier flight home, so you leave the resort before the worst of it; a Sunday arrival if your accommodation allows it; and, on the way up, not planning anything for the first evening that depends on arriving at an exact time. A private transfer does not beat the traffic, but it does leave when you land, rather than when a shared coach is full.

What if your flight is late?

Delays happen, especially in winter. With Montivo Transfers, the free waiting time is one hour counted from when your flight actually lands, not from the time it was scheduled to land. A delay before you take off does not use any of it. Give your flight number when you book so we know when you have actually landed.

One price per vehicle, not per person

A private transfer is priced per vehicle, and the price is fixed when you book. A Standard vehicle takes up to eight passengers and a VIP vehicle up to seven, so for a family or a group of friends, splitting one vehicle is often cheaper per person than shared shuttle seats, and nobody waits for other passengers’ flights. The booking form asks how many suitcases and ski or snowboard bags you are bringing, so the driver knows what to expect.

Plans change. If you cancel before the transfer, we keep 30 EUR to cover the card fees on the payment and the refund, and refund the rest. The full details are on the cancellation and refunds page.

Not flying in via Switzerland?

Geneva is not the only option. Lyon has a wide choice of flights, Chambery is the closest airport to the Tarentaise resorts, and Grenoble serves Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes. Every route and its price is on our airport transfers page, and all the Geneva routes are on the Geneva Airport transfers page.
